How to host your own Mother Blessing Ceremony

Back in April I had the honour of attending a Pregnancy Wellness day at Studio Soma in Romsey. It was hosted by Autumn Rose, who offer pregnancy and postpartum yoga and massage, Kristina Turner held a Mother Blessing ceremony which was truly moving. The whole day was uplifting and emotional and it felt sacred to be in the company of women about to embark upon motherhood alongside the wisdom of mothers whose children are now adults. I really loved it, so when preparing for a weekend away with my best girlies, one of whom is pregnant, it was obvious we should mark this transition with a Mother Blessing ceremony, rather than a traditional baby shower.

If you would like to host your own, lean into your own creativity and create a space where the new mother you are celebrating can feel grounded and emotionally supported. I tweaked our ceremony so it felt more bespoke to the women in our circle.

For our blessing ceremony I teamed up with my mystical friend who hosted the  intention setting part of the ceremony based upon specially chosen tarot cards. We all wrote our intentions of what to hold and to let go of. We also performed a red thread ceremony as I had learnt from Kristina Turner, we created a sacred alter with water, and watermelon and I wrote a poem for the new mother. Which was slightly nerve wracking as she is an accomplished writer herself.

To finish the ceremony we burnt the intentions we wanted to eat go of, ate watermelon together and decorated the mother’s bump with pressed flowers. The flowers were collected and pressed by one of our group, so everyone had a role.
It was a beautiful moment to hold space for our girl before she welcomes her second child into the world and felt the perfect way to celebrate female friendship at its best, supportive, grounding and uplifting all in one.

So if you are deciding between a baby shower or a mother blessing then let this be a sign to bless the new mothers in your life and make space for them. You’ll feel good too from all the wonders of feminine energy in the room.

Poem for Abby

Poppyseed, grape, lime,

Mango, banana, head of corn

Cabbage, coconut, watermelon

How absurd it seems to think of you as all of these fruits

But also how amazing too, little one

This time next year you will be eating all of these things

Juicy watermelon and sticky hands

Happy, clappy, wavy hands

Oh hello juicy little one

Little hands that, right now, are scrunched up inside your mum,

Sometimes reaching out

Soon they will be holding on with that tight newborn grip

Holding onto mum’s finger

Dad’s finger

Big brother’s finger

Squeeeeeze

That little grasp is magic

And so is the mother that grows you

And here we are

Together

Holding space for you, now, and the path ahead

Armfuls of fruits and blessings

Heavy sprinkles of compliments, like  poppyseeds on a cake

Healing foods we will start with the classic - bunches of grapes

Acidic digs at anyone who wrongs you, like a protective lime

Gifts to show love, like hand me downs, handmade goods, or sunny yellow mangos

Hugs that feel like the comfort of freshly baked banana bread

(if you are banana inclined)

We won’t bring things that are a faff, like a head of corn, that is a shit gift for a new mum

Early morning texts about the virtues of cabbage leaves

Gentle words of reassurance or novel distraction when it feels like there are cracks in the coconut

Watermelon for a summer babe and the eternal thirst of a new mother

A mother of two

A mother of two

We hold you too

We hold you too

We always will

We always will

If you would like a more structured blessing ceremony with a woman with amazing magical knowledge then Kristina Turner is your woman. ❤️
